How to Choose an Interactive Whiteboard: 5 Specs That Actually Matter

How to Choose an Interactive Whiteboard: 5 Specs That Actually Matter

On a product page, most interactive whiteboards look alike: a big touchscreen, a pen, and a promise of better collaboration. The differences only show up once it's on the wall and a class or a meeting is using it.

This guide covers the specs that actually change how a board gets used day to day: touch, the built-in computer, camera and microphones, connections, and warranty. We use SONIQ's two models as worked examples, because they sit at different points on each of these.

1. Touch: how many people can write at once

Touch points are the number of fingers or pens the screen tracks at the same time. It decides whether one person presents while everyone watches, or several people work on the board together.

More touch points means more people can write on the board at the same time.

Writing feel matters too. The 75" uses infrared touch with a response time of 2 ms or less and accuracy of ±0.5 mm across most of the screen. It picks up objects as small as 1.5 mm, so fingers, the included stylus or any opaque pointer all work.

2. Built in computer or plug in a laptop?

Every interactive whiteboard has a computer inside it, and how capable it is decides how often someone needs to plug in a laptop.

The 75" runs Android 13 on an 8-core processor with 8 GB of RAM and 64 GB of storage. SONIQ describes it as delivering smooth Android performance for presenting, annotating and wireless collaboration. For schools or offices standardised on Windows, it also has an OPS slot, a standard bay that takes a plug-in Windows computer module.

The 55" comes with an OPS PC and runs both Android 5.1 and Windows 10, with Cybercast, a media centre and a file manager preloaded. It suits simpler use: presenting, annotating and playing media.

If staff mostly present from their own laptops, the built-in computer matters less. If the board needs to work the moment someone walks in, it matters a lot.

3. Camera and microphones for hybrid lessons and meetings

If anyone joins remotely, the camera and microphones matter as much as the screen. Without them, you're adding a webcam, a speakerphone and more cables to every room.

The 75" builds this in:

  • A 48 MP camera in the top frame, with gesture recognition and sound source localisation
  • 8 microphones picking up voices from up to 8 metres, across a 180° angle
  • Echo cancellation, noise reduction and reverberation suppression
  • Four 16 W speakers

The 55" doesn't list a built-in camera or microphones. It works well for in-room presenting; for video calls, plan on a separate camera and conference microphone.

4. Connections and charging

Count how many devices will plug in during a normal day, and where people will stand when they do it.

The 75" puts the everyday ports on the front panel: USB-C with 65 W charging (so a laptop connects and charges on one cable), two USB 3.0 ports, HDMI and NFC. Around the back are three more HDMI inputs, DisplayPort, VGA, RS232 and network in and out. It connects over Wi-Fi 6 and Bluetooth 5.2.

The 55" has three HDMI inputs, USB 2.0 and 3.0, VGA, RS232, optical audio and Ethernet, with 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi.

Both support wireless screen sharing, so presenters don't always need a cable.

5. Warranty and panel life

A classroom board gets touched, bumped and run for most of the school day, so check what the warranty covers and for how long.

  • The 75" carries a 3 year commercial warranty and a rated panel lifetime of at least 30,000 hours.
  • The 55" carries a 1 year commercial warranty.

Also check what's in the box. The 75" comes with a wall mount, stylus and power cord. The 55" includes a pen and remote, and uses a standard 400 x 200 mm VESA mount. Weight matters for the wall: the 75" is 52.8 kg and the 55" is 29 kg.

The 55" may suit you if you want a lower-cost board, people mainly present from their own laptops, and you don't need a built-in camera for video calls.

The 75" may suit you if you want a larger screen, more people writing at once, or a built-in camera and microphones for hybrid lessons and meetings.

How Brighton Grammar uses interactive displays

Brighton Grammar School in Melbourne, with over 1,400 students from early learning to Year 12, rolled out SONIQ displays across its campus. That included interactive touchscreens for classroom learning, alongside kiosks, reception signage and an outdoor LED screen for sport.

Everything runs through Cybercast, so the same platform handles classroom content, campus news and emergency alerts. Read the full Brighton Grammar case study.

Frequently asked questions

What's the difference between an interactive whiteboard and a normal display?

An interactive whiteboard has a touch layer and a built-in computer, so you can write, draw and open files directly on the screen. A standard display only shows what's sent to it.

How many people can use an interactive whiteboard at once?

It depends on the touch points. SONIQ's 55" tracks 10, and the 75" tracks 20 on Android or 40 with a Windows OPS module.

Can an interactive whiteboard run Windows?

Yes. The 55" runs Android and Windows 10. The 75" runs Android 13 and has an OPS slot for a plug-in Windows computer.

Do I need a separate webcam for video calls?

Not with the 75", which has a built-in 48 MP camera and 8 microphones. The 55" doesn't list a camera, so you'd add one.

How much does an interactive whiteboard cost?

SONIQ's 55" is $2,199 and the 75" is $3,950. Current pricing is on the interactive whiteboards range.

Not sure which board fits your room?

Tell us the room size, how many people use it, and whether anyone joins remotely, and we'll recommend the right board. Book a consultation with the SONIQ team or browse our interactive whiteboards.

ABN holders can spread the cost with Procuret, and Afterpay is available on purchases up to $4,000.
